Ecuador World Healing Exchange Trip

March 13 - 27, 2010

Please join us for a unique trip to learn about the ancient healing practices in Ecuador and to provide acupuncture services to local people who have been victims of poverty and environmental exploitation. Our guide is an extraordinary ethnobotanist and environmental justice advocate, as well as a healer.

Greetings!

The purpose of Acupuncturists Without Borders World Healing Exchange program is to provide service and training in communities around the world and to learn from indigenous and traditional healers in these locations about their healing practices. An important part of these journeys is also for us to renew and refresh, and to deepen our own practices that support the work we each do in the world.

Our first World Healing Exchange program went to Nepal in 2009. We treated hundreds of people. Program participants reported that this was an incredible and life-changing trip. Participants are now organizing to go back to Nepal and offer a training program.

AWB's second international World Healing Exchange program will take place in Ecuador over 14 days of ecological adventure, deep cultural immersion, and community acupuncture treatments in local villages.

Ecuador has been the target of severe environmental assaults, and is a country with deep poverty. Our potential long term program will focus on training local healers to treat the impact of these issues on the people in their communities.

The trip will visit key cultural and ecological areas of Highland and Amazonian Ecuador. Nighttime tours of Quito monasteries, sunrise tea ceremonies with local healers, and hikes through what is considered to be the epicenter of orchid diversity on Earth are only the beginning of what this trip has in store.

This trip is our introductory journey to Ecuador. We will get to know communities through our work with them and the healing exchanges with local practitioners. The goal will be to forge relationships for more in-depth work in the future. Priority for representing AWB in Ecuador as a trainer will be given to participants on this trip.

Sincerely,

Diana Fried, Founder and Executive Director

As AWB travels between towns and villages throughout Ecuador participants will meet with local healers, herbalists, midwives and shamans to experience the traditional medicine of the community. AWB will offer free acupuncture services to villagers and community members, introducing our medicine and exploring the potential for longer-term training programs. This is a tremendous opportunity to provide service in a very high-need area and to learn from a culture that is rich with indigenous healing traditions.

We hope this program, which combines healing, service, practice and culture, will leave you inspired, renewed and committed to the vision of a better world. We invite you to join us!

This program is co-sponsored by Fundacion OSA (Council for Cultural and Biological Diversity or CCBD). Fundacion OSA is working in Ecuador on ground level rainforest conservation, cultural heritage, and environmental education programs in rural regions of coastal, Amazonian and Andean Ecuador.

The villages we will visit, and where free acupuncture clinics will be held, are located at the CCBD project regions. The first visits are to Tena and on the Eastern side of Napo Galeras National Park where CCBD has programs in biodiversity conservation and environmental awareness.

The second region is near Puyo, at the Amazanga village where CCBD has helped create a 5,000-acre biological reserve.

The third village is the Agua Santa community and other communities such as Kacha, near Riobamba, where CCBD has been supporting reforestation efforts since 1995.

Potential long-term training programs will help support the communities working on important environmental issues.
